The name Gotham originates from an old English town and its residents, who when threatened by King John of England with the proposal to build a road through their town, began acting crazy, eccentric, foolish and generally different in order to Frighten King John and prevent the construction! And it worked! This led to other places that embrace the foolish, the crazy and the odd (a.k.a the goats) to use it as a nickname.
