Churchill Retirement Living is a privately owned, family run company. Founded in 1994 by Spencer and Clinton McCarthy. The company originally started out building stone and thatched cottages in and around Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire, under the name of Emlor Homes. With its office based in Clinton’s Garage in the New Forest. In 1998 the company was voted “Housebuilder of the Year” by What House Magazine. The brothers then decided to move into the sheltered housing market in 2000. After the success of its first development “Avon Lodge” in Southbourne they decided to sell all their open market sites and to concentrate in the retirement market. The Brothers are the Sons of John McCarthy MBE who founded McCarthy & Stone in 1964. McCarthy & Stone built their first retirement development in 1977, since then they have built over 60,000 retirement flats. John McCarthy left McCarthy & Stone in 2004 following a failed buyout bid by his sons; he is now a Non Executive Investor Director with Churchill Retirement Living.
