Amidst the smart shops in this corner of historic York is the location for Mr P’s Curious Tavern, AKA Andrew Pern’s latest quirky venture at 71 Low Petergate, which offers something for everyone: small plates from around the world to taste along with a glass (or two) of something different and ambience by the barrel load, to sate your curiosity and appetite. 71 Low Petergate (curiously, formerly known as 45 Low Petergate) is Grade II listed and dates back to the early C17th, a period when York was becoming known as the Social Capital of the North. One of its first occupants was a Thomas Gent, a (largely unsuccessful) printer by trade who published the original York newspaper, the ‘Courant’ from the property. Another of his publications was a journal entitled ‘Miscellanea Curiosa’ and, whilst it concerned to numerical issues rather than vittles’ from near and far, we are happy, indeed, to note this curious link! Mr P’s Menu encourages you to pick and mix from the selection of small dishes we offer: fresh shellfish and seafood, a few oddities like ‘Haute Dogs’, Croque M’Lad or M’Lass, to put together your own meal as your appetite, humour and curiosity allow. For a more robust meal, we will have more substantial offerings and for liquid refreshment, Mr P’s offers small, medium and large vessels of wine, spirits and other beverages, some fortified, all fantastic.
