The French House emerged from a shared interest in the French way of life and living that father and son, Stephen and Marcus Hazell, developed as they travelled around South West France. From a small beginning bringing interesting pieces back for friends in a broken down old Post Office van that had a tendency to be overcome with fatigue on an upward incline(not good in the Pyrenees) the idea for the French House was forged and the first high street premises opened in York in 1997. The London showroom followed several years later. The French House has remained a family business and prides itself on the personal customer service it provides, whether it be helping a client choose the right piece from a selection taken to their home or taking the trouble to source specific items in France. A large warehouse in France helps facilitate the movement of stock and new pieces arrive constantly. Many of the pieces we source are traditional 18th and 19th pieces - gilt mirrors, farmhouse tables and benches, period lighting, upholstered furniture, etc and we have a dedicated team of craftsmen who undertake any restoration work required. Increasingly we find vintage pieces that are given a new lease of life, transforming industrial or unusual artefacts into items suitable for modern day 21st Century living, or recovering antique chairs with up to the minute fabric designs.
