Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway Informacje o firmie
Ogólne informacje
In 1870 a 2' gauge tramway was built between Wilson Shaft & Railhead dressing floor. In 1886 this was partly covered by a snow shed (the Tramway Tunnel) to prevent further line blockages due to snow. A Light Railway Order was granted in 1897 and construction of the standard gauge Leadhills & Wanlockhead Light Railway was started in late 1899 by Robert McAlpine & Sons. The line was opened from Elvanfoot to Leadhills on 01 October 1901, and to Wanlockhead the following year. The last passenger train ran on 31 December 1938 and the line officially closed on 02 January 1939. The Lowthers Railway Society was formed in September 1983. Passenger trains on a 2' narrow gauge railway commenced in 1988 over a short section of track and the line reached the current terminus of the line, Glengonnar Halt, in September 1995. The Society is now closer to being granted a lease from the county boundary fence to the NATS road, this is within the boundary of Wanlockhead.
